Early Life and Education

Tunde Kelani was born on February 26, 1948, in Lagos, Nigeria. At the age of five, he moved to Abeokuta, Ogun State, to live with his grandparents. Growing up in Abeokuta, Kelani had the privilege of observing various aspects of Yoruba culture up close, thanks to his grandfather’s position as the Balogun of Ijaiye Kukudi. This exposure immersed him in Yoruba literature, philosophy, environments, and worldview within the arts.

Kelani’s interest in photography began during his elementary school years and continued to grow during his time at Abeokuta Grammar School. After completing high school, he pursued his passion further by becoming an apprentice photographer. He later received training at Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) before eventually attending the London Film School.

Kelani’s filmmaking approach is deeply rooted in his background in theater and literature.
